Exceptional reflections

Words by Rosie Cattrell

Combining the worlds of architecture and interior design to deliver buildings with character both inside and out.

After many years working at acclaimed practices, including Foster and Partners, Anouska Hempel and MMM Architects, husband and wife team Gavin and Sarah decided to combine their expertise into a single studio and practice – Woodford Architecture and Interiors. Today, supported by an expert team of architects, architectural technologists and interior designers, the company has earned itself a reputation for quality service, timeless architecture and beautifully unique interiors.

“For many of our clients, our projects in Cornwall are particularly about enjoyment with their families and a connection to the outdoors and their surroundings. It’s more about relaxation and wellbeing, and a care for the environment and sustainability,” explains Gavin. “We want to create homes, and as such we don’t have an in-house style,” Sarah adds. “Together with our clients, we want to think of every little detail that goes towards making a home as special as it can be.”

The interiors that accompany the framework of the architectural masterpieces of Woodford are truly awe-inspiring, and it’s no wonder. Having graduated from the Inchbald School of Design with distinction and the school prize for interior design, Sarah has worked for the Royal household, the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery as well as various museums and private collectors worldwide. “After studying Fine Antique Restoration and Conservation, I then worked for Arnold Wiggins and Sons, who are historic framers to the Royal household and international art galleries. During my time there I worked on the framing of world-famous old masters’ painting, as well as modern British masters. Having that experience has honed an attention to detail and an appreciation of historical context, particularly when working on older listed buildings.

“I was invited to work with some leading international interior designers on large-scale renovations of central London properties, using my traditional decorative skills in a more contemporary way. It was during this period that I decided to combine my talents with Gavin’s to create Woodford Architecture and Interiors.” Working closely with each client, Sarah and the team are able to curate a perfect reflection of an individual’s idea of heaven within the walls of their new home, and here we showcase some of the stunning possibilities that Gavin and Sarah’s combined, holistic approach is capable of bringing to life.
