Seeking sanctuary

Words by Rosie Cattrell

In the hands of experts with decades of experience in the industry, the bathroom of your dreams has never been more tangible.

The ways in which we use our homes have changed over the past few years, and more and more are we recognising how our spaces make us feel, how straightforward and seamless they can make our day-to-day movements, turning the little things into small joys if configured correctly. We are beginning to realise that, while flawless functionality is key in any room, an element of individuality and overall enjoyment is what makes a home our own, a place in which we want to spend time and take in all the details.

As arguably the most private room in the home, the bathroom is certainly no exception, and is starting to mean much more than merely a space to wash off the day and brush our teeth. Here is an opportunity for a moment of solace away from the noise of the day, to soak in the roll-top, claw-foot tub, or feel the soft rush of water move over you under a soothing waterfall shower, the glow of warm lighting casting a calming atmosphere over a room designed for tranquillity.

The home of unique and entirely individual bathrooms for over 35 years, the team at Ripples understand only too well what a carefully considered and flawlessly designed bathroom can do for your home, especially one that is crafted from your own imagination. Not one for a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, every bathroom designed by Ripples is beautifully bespoke to mirror the client’s dream.

The vision of Founder and Chief Executive Roger Kyme, Ripples found its feet when he decided to focus exclusively on luxury bathrooms after having spent many years at a senior level at Travis Perkins. Immersing himself in the high-end interior showrooms of Canada for a short time, he wanted to bring this same retail experience to the UK, and in 1988, alongside his wife Sandra Kyme, the first Ripples showroom was opened in the aptly named city of Bath.

Today, with a sterling reputation preceding it, Ripples is the proud winner of over 60 coveted industry awards, spanning everything from showroom standards to design innovation, not to mention a stunning collection of bathrooms proudly displayed on its website and dotted all over the country.

Excitingly for homeowners here in Cornwall, the brand recently unveiled a brand-new showroom in our very own cathedral city, Truro. Expanding its national presence with this latest move, Ripples brings a vast array of quality products from some of Europe’s top luxury brands. From hand-painted boat baths and stylish concrete basins, to brushed gold brassware and marble tiles, the new showroom features products and design solutions to surprise and delight even the most discerning bathroom improver. Once you’ve browsed the product selection, you’ll be able to consult a designer who can expertly guide you through your bathroom project, creating a unique design specifically tailored to your needs.

“Our new premises fills a gap in the market for a high-end bathroom retailer with personal service at its heart,” says Owner and Director of the Truro showroom, Daron O’Regan. “The showroom itself has a warm and welcoming boutique feel, with a mix of traditional and contemporary products and displays.”

Head inside and you’ll discover a full range of products, covering baths, showers and enclosures, WCs, basins and brassware in almost every style, colour and design imaginable. You’ll also find unique collections and materials that offer something a little bit different. Think copper baths, special finish brassware and bespoke, solid-wood furniture. In short, there’s something to suit all tastes; the new Ripples showroom is about giving you the inspiration you need to get your design journey started. And once you’re feeling inspired, an in-house designer can help turn your vision into reality.

As an example of what this reality might look like, let’s move our gaze to one recent Ripples project – a Victorian home whose owners looked to transform their existing en-suite. Now a Scandi-inspired bathroom with neutral tones, gold and cream layered through the room, the walk-in shower is certainly the centrepiece of the room, inviting a pampering shower experience beneath the gold rainfall shower head. A calming herringbone tile configuration adds a satisfying texture to the room, contributing to the calming arrangement, each one slightly varied in colour and veining. Chosen to not only make a visual impact within the room, but because of the huge amount of storage space it offers (with four deep drawers), the Scandi-inspired vanity unit provides plenty of places to stow away towels and bathroom products, adding to the feeling of considered serenity.

As another case study, the owners of a gorgeous five-bedroom home sought something a little different in an open-plan bathroom configuration, with one show-stopping feature at the top of the wish list. The copper bath tub is no doubt the point around which the rest of the bathroom revolves, with the designer having created two equally impressive vistas – of the view and of the bath. They incorporated a central wall to section off the bedroom and ensure both areas created drama and impact. By using large-format marble-effect tiles, a sense of luxury is achieved while the natural finish of the bath takes centre stage, not to mention the practical qualities of copper which, as a super-conductor, allows the bath to stay a lovely temperature for longer, just perfect for a leisurely soak.

By dramatically increasing the footprint of the space, the designer was able to create a separate room for the WC and shower, partitioned by a sliding door which adds privacy as well as keeping steam from escaping into the bedroom. The two rooms were tied together into a cohesive scheme by incorporating the same black brassware and introducing the same marble-effect tiles as the bath area.

While only a small sample of the extensive Ripples portfolio of dream bathrooms made real, this insight has me wondering what my own dream bathroom looks like, and the thought of designing the entire thing around a beautiful bath tub is a vision I can get behind. Luckily for me, the new Cornwall showroom is close by to guide me. Located at 11 River Street, Ripples in Truro invites you into a warm and welcoming space, adorned with traditional and contemporary products and displays configured to welcome and inspire. So, if you’re still looking for your sanctuary, your search may well be over – the only thing left to do is imagine it. Call 01872 713061 to get in touch and start your bathroom journey.
